988: The New Mental Health Crisis Lifeline

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a network of independent crisis centers across the US that are prepared to help people experiencing mental health distress 24/7. The Lifeline is a free, confidential, accessible care resource for anyone.

Starting on July 16, 2022, a new three-digit Lifeline number will go into effect: 988. Dialing 988 will connect callers with a trained crisis counselor in a local center. The Lifeline offers compassionate support and can also help the caller find local services to meet their needs.

The original Lifeline phone number, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), will continue to remain available to callers after the launch of 988.
