Gastroparesis Awareness Month

August 14, 2025, 1:47 pm

August is Gastroparesis awareness month. Gastroparesis can be responsible for a variety of symptoms from mild to severe. It is a chronic disorder that delays stomach emptying. Symptoms can include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Dry heaving
  • Stomach fullness after a normal-sized meal
  • Early fullness or inability to finish a meal

If unmanaged, the condition can lead to more severe symptoms (ex. Dehydration, obstruction, malnutrition) and has the potential to be life-threatening. A variety of things can lead to gastroparesis such as certain types of surgeries, medications, and illnesses that impact the whole body. Hydration, regular physical activity, reduced alcohol and tobacco use, and thorough communication with your healthcare providers are some tips to avoid gastroparesis.  IFFGD, linked below, has a variety of resources for understanding and preventing gastroparesis.
