Fitness Goals

With a new year, comes a new you! A healthy lifestyle is more than a new year’s resolution. Diet and exercise combined can make a huge impact on your health. Below are several tips to help you set attainable goals.

Write down your short-term and long-term goals. Make the short-term goals doable. Don't aim for the half-marathon that's coming up in a month if you find it difficult to take a 15 minute brisk walk without huffing and puffing. If you haven't exercised for a long time, make weekly goals to begin with; and then when your fitness level has improved, write down your monthly goals. Save your highest aspirations for your long-term goals and work toward them one day at a time.

Record your daily fitness activities with an app or online fitness tracker. Note the types and times of your activities. If you jog for 34 minutes, then be exact and record 34, not 30 or 35 minutes. You can also record your food intake to monitor calories, carbs and other items.

To lose a pound, you have to burn approximately 3500 calories. If you burn a total of 500 calories with exercise AND diet each day, you'll lose a pound in about 7 days.

Choose exercises and activities that you know you will enjoy or have been curious about.

Stay focused. When you set fitness goals, staying focused is your key to success. Set yourself up for success. Make your goal one that you can achieve. If you decide to exercise for 2 hours a day, how long do you think that will last? What about food? Create a food plan that you can actually stick to over time.

When you set fitness goals, make sure they are attainable with everything that is going on in your life now.

Check with your health-care provider before beginning an exercise program for the first time or if you have been away from fitness programs for a while, or if you have any chronic health issues.
